#02: Believing Your English is Rubbish

It’s common to only notice negatives and vulnerabilities using your second language.

The gap between what you want to say and what you can express can be frustrating.
There are all those exceptions to rules which feel designed to trap you… Not to mention the feeling of realising half an hour after a conversation finished that you used an expression wrong.

Lots of us spend our time staring back at our mistakes and limitations in horror.

And all that dwelling on errors has convinced our brains that we are rubbish at English, that it is too risky.

That it is safer not to try.

Forget perfect English, think adventure English.

Where can this imperfect language take you? And how much fun can you have on the journey?

You can say great things with even a little English. Just let it be your wings.

We have an offer to help keep your English fresh over winter.

Our 𝗧𝗼𝗽 𝗨𝗣 𝗠𝘆 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 vouchers keep you talking!

There’s no fixed schedule, no pressure, just a fun space to practice speaking – and support learning to love being you in English.

Tips for Lack of Confidence

  • Thinking more often about what you CAN do in English.
  • Celebrate positives.
  • Integrate a system noting progress & tiny wins into your learning (journal, stickers, rewards).
  •  Get yourself a safe, fun, non-judgmental practice space.

#03: Overwhelm

The one thing artists & makers are all short of is time.

Urgent stuff gets done (at last minute) and non-urgent career-building stuff gets shelved.

Because who has got time for the non-urgent list?

The flaw in the creative lifestyle is that precious things slip away from us. Language skills, piano skills… your ability to do gymnastics… they all fade away unprioritised as we work so hard to develop our careers, fighting for every opportunity.

While it’s unlikely the next career opportunity will involve demonstrating the front splits (good health still matters!), it is likely to require you to communicate effectively in English – perhaps even present your work in English.

Getting your English right under pressure is a tough ask!

(We should know. At our language school we help more people with emergency ‘Aghhh I’ve got an interview’ coaching afternoons, than a course designed to build presentation skills over 6 weeks of training).

Our next 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 begins March 2024. (We only offer the course once a year).

Gain deep English presentation skills over a lifetime, built around the vocabulary you need to describe your work.

Tips for Overwhelm in Language Learning

  • English learned in fun, stress-free circumstances stays with you longer than anxious cramming.
  • English learned over time lasts longer than last minute.
  • Our course has real artist/designer guests to chat art with online and practice presenting your work to (all the benefits of repeating and refining your message, but to new audiences).
  • It’s way more cost-effective.

Plan ahead for the next Aghhh English moment!

#05: English Tuition Not Meeting Creatives’ Needs

Artists, Designers, Architects, Makers, Creatives and Creative Thinkers need English language tuition providing the language skills they need for their particular creative careers AND their learning strengths.

English for Creative Careers courses are written to develop each creative’s unique language needs, as well as building global language terms and skills to present and promote their work internationally, to collaborate, to negotiate and to share all kinds of ideas spontaneously.

Tips for Finding a Good English Course for Creatives

  • It’s not a general English course adapted.
  • It’s not a business English course adapted.
  • And it does not look like a high school English class.

#06: You’ve Fallen off the Bus

To ‘fall off the bus’ is a relatively new expression used to describe failing to keep up with a course.

It describes the way the course will trundle on without you, regardless, leaving you further and further behind, alone with only the progress you made.

It is so easy to fall off the bus. The completion rate of online courses in the post-COVID era is between 5-15%.

So it’s not just you. Many online courses suck.

And even if that last course was great, the timing/format wasn’t right for you.

This isn’t to say you don’t need to show up and work. It’s to say that if the match is perfect, you have a much better chance of doing it!

👉 Find out more about our 𝗢𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀.

Tips to Restart Language Learning

  • Don’t give up, there are many more opportunities.
  • Don’t dwell on ‘failing’. You took action. You tried!
  •  Work out what went wrong. What got between you and completing your other course(s)?
  • Research your options, there are MANY for online English.

If it was too intensive last time, look for something with fewer hours.

Too boring? Find a different format…

  • Ask for help getting ‘back on the bus’.

#07: Feeling Trapped

Have you updated how you feel speaking English?

If you have flashbacks of disempowering classrooms and teenage vulnerability it will be impossible to show up professionally in English.

The good news is that you can rewrite how you feel in English.

The even better news is that it happens when you relax and have fun.

With our language school holidays, you practice English in professional contexts that convert your old English into being 100% relevant to you and your career.

Escape the classroom and you escape a classroom mindset.

– When have you laughed in English?

– When have you told stories and shared good times and good food in English?

As an adult, this is how you begin speaking with confidence: presenting your work and impressing in English naturally follow.
