Scotch Broth

Postcards from Scotland

I’m taking inspiration from a traditional Scottish meal to send you bite-sized tasters of Scotland — postcards, perhaps.

It’s not me telling you full stories about everything that’s happening.

I’m sharing bites and flavours, nuggets, moments that enchanted me, and that I hope will enchant you, to give you a taste of being here with me, sharing the wonder of Scotland.

You can think of my messages as travel sketches

They:

  • Leave space

  • Ask nothing of you

  • Offer a sense of being here — in the town, the landscape, the season

  • Arrive without instruction or expectation

They’re just small moments from Scotland, I think you might enjoy.

About the Soup

Scotch broth is a traditional soup. It’s hearty, healthy, warm, comforting and nutritious.

You could follow a recipe, but most people don’t. You just mix in what’s in the fridge — half a cabbage, whatever you have. It’s food for feeding many people cheaply, with big chunks so that every spoonful is different from the next. Every broth is different from the next.

You can imagine being outdoors, exercising or working the fields, searching, looking after sheep — and that there’s nothing better, warmer, or tastier than coming inside and immediately having a hot bowl of soup.
