Bold, Told, Gold.

An art studio experience that helps your English grow through observation, creativity and conversation.

Bold, Told, Gold is a creative workshop where art-making becomes the starting point for meaningful English.

You’ll spend time being guided through a range of artistic materials in a way where the final results don’t matter. Instead, you’ll discover what different materials can do, the kinds of marks they invite, and what happens when you stop trying to get everything right.

We share stories about what we’re drawing, and much more besides. You’ll be amazed at what can happen when your focus is on colour, texture and line—not on finding the right words.

No artistic experience is needed. (I really can’t stress this enough.) Everyone can benefit from making marks, not just people who think they know how to draw.

The workshop isn’t about producing a finished masterpiece, although there is an invitation to bring everything together in a final still life drawing.

Above all, it’s about noticing, experimenting, and working with materials that leave you with no alternative but to be… bold.

Once you’ve experienced bold mark-making, it’s surprisingly hard to go back. That confidence stays with you.

Helping You on the Middle Way

Bold, Told, Gold is one of the ways Blue Noun helps people who have chosen the Middle Way.

You don’t have to choose between a language holiday and a family holiday.

Our Middle Way experiences are designed for people who want to weave meaningful English into the trip they’re already taking.

They offer dedicated time for your English, without taking the relaxation out of your holiday or asking you to spend half a day in a classroom.

Whether you join us for an afternoon in the studio, our Mid Journey workshop, or another Blue Noun experience, you’ll return to your travels with new memories, greater confidence, and English that feels more connected to you.

It’s the English practice you were hoping for—while still feeling like you’re, well… on holiday.

What Happens?

Our Blue Noun space is filled with living plants, curious objects and unusual materials. Each has its own textures, shapes and stories, and you’ll choose what you’d like to explore.

Throughout the afternoon, I’ll guide you through a range of expressive materials, including inks, pastels, monoprinting and natural drawing tools. You’ll discover how each one encourages a different way of making marks, without worrying about getting it right.

As we work, we’ll share stories, observations and conversations inspired by the objects around us.

English grows naturally through the experience, with gentle support whenever you need it.

Throughout the workshop, you’ll be given invitations to be bold.

They’re designed to help you experiment, notice details, tell stories and trust your own voice in English.

Why Art?

Art gives us permission to experiment.

There are very few places in adult life where we’re encouraged to play, make mistakes and try something simply to see what happens.

An art workshop is one of them. That same spirit of curiosity and experimentation is invaluable when developing English.

There are no right answers, and no pressure to get it right. Instead of trying to think of something to say in English, your attention is on colour, texture, shape and story.

The conversation grows naturally from what you’re making and observing.

I’ve included creative workshops in my English holidays for years because they create relaxed, memorable opportunities to use language.

They encourage slowing down, curiosity, careful observation and personal expression—qualities that are just as valuable in English as they are in art.

You don’t need to think of yourself as artistic.

You simply need to be willing to experiment. The marks you make are far less important than the conversations, discoveries and confidence that grow around them.

About your host

I’m Ruth, founder of Blue Noun. I love bringing people together and helping visitors experience Scotland more deeply.

Alongside my work in English language coaching, I’ve also worked in arts education for over 10 years, teaching in art school environments and helping people develop ideas, confidence, and creative expression.

You absolutely do not need to be “good at art” to join this workshop.

Just like my language coaching, my role is not to judge your artistic talent, but help you use it.

I know how to help you create something superbly personal and meaningful in a way that feels enjoyable, and helps you connect more deeply with your experience of Scotland and your English.

What You’ll Take Away

Seeing Like an Artist

One of the most exciting things about visiting an art school is seeing the way artists put objects together.

Things with no obvious connection suddenly belong in the same space. Plants, found objects, old books, interesting surfaces, typography and everyday treasures are arranged in ways that invite curiosity rather than explanation.

Most people rarely get the chance to work like this, but for artists it’s second nature.

During Bold, Told, Gold, the objects in our space become part of your own story. They become prompts for observation, conversation and mark-making, helping your English take root through real experiences rather than exercises.

Why Crieff?

Many people expect high-quality creative and language experiences to exist inside large cities or formal institutions.

But part of Blue Noun’s philosophy is that smaller places can create a very different kind of learning atmosphere — one with more space for conversation, reflection, attention, and genuine connection.

Crieff’s slower pace, small town friendliness, landscapes, cafés, and community events make it an unusually powerful environment for this kind of English experience.

That’s part of why people travel here from around the world to join our holidays and workshops.
