Groups can be brilliant places to use English — but they’re not for everyone.
Perhaps you spend enough of your working life in offices, classrooms or groups and don’t want to share your holiday with one. Perhaps you simply feel more at ease using English one-to-one. Or perhaps you have a particular interest or language goal that you’d love the freedom to explore more deeply.
Private Experience English gives you the Blue Noun experience entirely to yourself. Without other guests to balance, we have much more freedom to follow what genuinely engages you — in your English, in Perthshire and in the experiences we create together.
It is still Experience English the Blue Noun way: slow, thoughtful, curious and connected to place. The difference is that, with just one guest, we can go deeper.
A Blue Noun Field Note
My Blue Noun Field Notes make visible some of the thinking and decision-making that happens during a Blue Noun language holiday.
On this holiday, I discovered that you loved being near the sea. So we did a lot of coastal walking, exploring different seascapes and seeing what we found along the way.
One of the things we found was a sculpture commemorating COVID. It led us to swap our experiences, compare how our countries remember difficult times, and wonder how temporary a memorial can be.
Following your interests gives us places to go. Paying attention when we get there gives us things to talk about.
Experience English 1 to 1 is a one-to-one version of the Experience English holiday we have developed and refined at Blue Noun over many years.
Based in Crieff, Perthshire, it combines English support with conversation, shared experiences and time exploring the places, culture and communities around us.
With only one guest, your interests and language needs can become much stronger threads through the week. We can spend more time with what fascinates you, explore the language around it, meet people who can add something to it, and let one experience lead naturally into another.
That doesn’t mean filling every day or racing around Scotland. There is still time to talk, eat well, rest, notice things and follow unexpected directions. The difference is that we don’t have to find the balance that works for a group.

Who is Experience English 1 to 1 for?
Experience English 1 to 1 is for adults who already have enough English to enjoy conversation and want more opportunities to use it — but would rather experience their holiday privately than as part of a group.
Your English certainly doesn’t need to be perfect. You might make mistakes, miss things, search for words or want plenty of help along the way.
Choosing a private holiday isn’t about how good your English is, or how confident you are using it. It’s about how you want to spend your time off. Some people flourish in a small group; others simply feel more comfortable having the experience to themselves.
What matters is that using English with other people feels more interesting than frightening.

Like all our holidays, Experience English is based at the Blue Noun Hub in Crieff, a small Scottish town in Perthshire.
The Hub gives us a comfortable place to talk, eat, learn, rest and regroup, while its central location gives us an excellent base for exploring further.
We spend time in landscapes, historic places, towns and villages, cultural spaces and local businesses — and with people who live and work here. Where we go is shaped by the season, the people in the group and the interests we are following that week.
Scotland isn’t simply the setting for your holiday. The places we visit and people we meet become part of the experience — and part of your English.

Why English Feels More Comfortable Here
We’ve done a lot to make the Blue Noun Hub feel unlike a classroom. But for some people, it isn’t the classroom they want to leave behind — it’s the group.
Some people flourish in a group. They enjoy the energy, different personalities and shared conversations. Others simply prefer their own pace: time to think, moments of silence, pauses that don’t need to be filled by another learner, and the freedom to stay with something for as long as it interests them. Neither is better.
Experience English 1 to 1 gives you that freedom without taking conversation out of your holiday. You’ll still spend your days talking with me and with the people we meet. What you won’t have is another learner’s interests, pace or preferences to accommodate.
And that opens up something more. Your interests — personal, professional or linguistic — can become much stronger threads through the week. We can explore them through the English we use, the places we choose and the people we seek out, going into a level of detail that simply wouldn’t always work for a group.
It’s Experience English with more freedom to follow your own direction — and go deeper when something matters to you.

The Story of this Holiday
Experience English is our original English coaching holiday. We have been developing and refining it over years of welcoming people to Scotland.
Its strength has always been its responsiveness. With no more than three guests, we can get to know the people who are coming, plan carefully around their interests and English, and keep responding as the week develops.
Over time, though, we also learned that some differences deserve more than flexibility. Someone returning to English after a difficult relationship with it needs a different starting point from someone eager to talk to everyone they meet. An older guest may simply want to know, before booking, that the pace and company will feel right for them.
Our themed and adapted Experience English holidays grew out of those gaps. They give some guests a clearer shared starting point — whether that’s age, confidence with English, walking, creativity, food or another strong interest.
Some guests also tell me they would rather not spend an English holiday with another learner who speaks their first language. With such small groups, I can’t promise what mix of nationalities any particular week will bring. Experience English 1 to 1 removes that uncertainty: your English-speaking experience doesn’t depend on who else happens to book.
For many people, though, Experience English itself remains the perfect fit: a small, carefully planned and responsive week with no predetermined theme, shaped around the people who come and what we discover together.

This was an exceptional opportunity. but it shows what becomes possible on a private Experience English holiday.
Because the experience is built around you, I can follow your professional interests, language needs and curiosity much further than I can within a group.
In this case, that meant matching a Spanish police officer with an afternoon inside a Scottish police station.
Why Did I Start Experience English Holidays?
What People Notice By The End Of The Week
Experience English 1 to 1 holidays can look very different from one another. That’s part of their value.
All Experience English holidays respond to the season, the people taking part and what we discover as the week unfolds. But with just one guest, we have much more freedom to follow a thread further — including the unexpected ones.
An interest can become a theme. A conversation can send us somewhere we hadn’t anticipated. A professional background can open up completely different language and encounters. And when something really catches your attention, we don’t have to leave it behind because it isn’t right for the rest of the group.
That’s how one private holiday came to explore Roman Scotland in depth, while another, with a museum curator, naturally filled with more galleries and museums, conversations with artists and encounters with people working on exhibitions. Another became much more focused on specialist language teaching.
The Blue Noun approach stays the same. What we get to do with it can become much more specifically yours.
A Private Holiday Rabbit Hole
Every private Experience English holiday finds its rabbit hole. We just don’t always know what it will be until you get here.
I can plan around the interests you tell me about beforehand, but one of my best skills is noticing when something really catches your attention — and finding ways to follow it further. That’s also one of the best ways I know to connect you with your English: when you genuinely care about something, there is suddenly so much more to notice, ask, understand and say.
Wild swimming is a good example. Some people love it, some hate it, and some are simply curious to try. It’s difficult to build much of a three-person holiday around when everyone feels differently about getting into cold Scottish water.
But on one private holiday, swimming became our rabbit hole. We swam in a different river or loch every day.
That’s the freedom of 1 to 1: when something clicks, we can follow it.
