Language School Halloween 2020

Our English language School decorated for Halloween 2020. Halloween Cultural celebrations during covid

This blog describes our language school creating a reason to celebrate during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Being closed to language guests enabled us to transform our teaching space into a socially distanced haunted house for local families…

Cultural Celebrations in the Time of Covid

This year is unlike any other we have had to bear.

Due to COVID we’re still closed to language guests and cannot offer our usual English language immersion holiday in Scotland.

Although we’re moving a few English learning courses online, in truth, this is difficult.

We are all about English experiences and tactile, immersive learning and that’s just hard to convert online.

I’m feeling the need to still act ‘normal,’ and mark the cultural celebrations we would normally celebrate with our English learners.

Perhaps such a ceremony grounds us.

Perhaps it is because we have the energy of  Young Blue to satiate.

It’s why I had the last-minute idea to turn Blue Noun English Language Hub into a Haunted House for all families in Crieff…

Read on for a taste of how our language school does cultural celebrations like Halloween.

There’s an English language practice exercise for you at the end too!

It’s why I had the last-minute idea to turn Blue Noun English Language Hub into a Haunted House for all families in Crieff…

“I’ve been frustrated by having our beautiful learning space sitting empty and I wanted to share it. Our business ethos has always been about bringing positive change to our community as we grow our business, and with a storm forecast, Covid restrictions in place on businesses and much for children closed, it seemed an easy way to give back.”

Like all good plans, it started with a cuppa
(and some cute scary cakes from our local bakery).

Transforming our English Language Hub

I had a great fun day ‘spooking up’ the place, with great ideas for gruesome decor (so much of it made possible with trips to the wonderful Remake Scotland scrap store).

I’ve mentioned Remake on this blog before. It’s really one of the best things about Crieff!

Remake are a charity which diverts landfill (waste) and sells it at very low prices to the local community as a ‘scrap store’. It’s amazing for artists and crafters.

Every town should have one!

Halloween Thrills in the Times of COVID

The evening itself was completely socially distanced, with families passing through one at a time, their torches lighting up the juxtaposition of gore and Haribo that is so particular to a young person’s Halloween.

The weather was wild and I found it all quite spooky, although the feedback from some much hardier 6-year-olds was that it should have had so much more blood – maybe even real blood.

Have a Horror-Filled English Language Immersion Holiday in Scotland!

Here’s an edit of footage of our Haunted House: it’s my first horror film edit – and although it was fun doing it, I think I’ll leave it to the professionals!
I just don’t have the stomach for it!

Next year, when we’re allowed to teach our usual group of 3 English learners, we’ll have an even bigger and better party.

Join us in scaring the local kids – if you dare!

English Language and Cultural Immersion

As a language school, we are all about looking for fun, creative ways to mix our language learners and community together for authentic language learning and cultural exchanges.

It was great to jump in and rescue a few kids’ Halloween.

Professionally, I really believe that if you help your community as your business grows, your community will be right behind you – and as we rely on local folks being such a big part of the language learning experience our guests have with us in Perthshire, it just makes sense to give back when we can.

It Just Remains to Dispose of the Body

In other news, I quite accidentally discovered how to do double exposures on my digital camera – which I hadn’t known was even possible.

Thank you to everyone who made their place look spooky for the kids who couldn’t go out guising this year.
There’s much that’s truly terrifying at the moment – it’s great for kids to get the excitement of pretend-scared.

Here are some double pumpkin shots, dedicated to anyone who’s spent time today clearing soggy ghosts out their gardens (especially if they blew in from one of your neighbours), risking life and limb up a ladder to untangle spiderwebs from light fittings or humfing empty pumpkins out to the bin.

Oh wait, that’s me.

And I’ve got some blood stains to mop up and a body to dismember…
