A Creative Way to Get Talking
If you’re travelling around Scotland and looking for a more authentic, interesting way to use your English, this may suit you.
A zine is a simple, handmade magazine, often made by collaging images and words.
It’s quick to make and easy to get started — which makes it a very natural space for conversation.
Zine-making gives us something to focus on together. You are not trying to perform. You are arranging, choosing, noticing, cutting, sticking, talking.
That shift often makes English feel more natural. People usually settle quickly. The conversation flows.
About the Zine Club
These sessions run weekly as a small shared creative practice led by Ruth Pringle and Claire Mullan.
You join us by stepping straight into making, chatting, and sharing the table.
This is not a language workshop in a traditional sense.
We don’t work through exercises or focus on specific skills. Instead, we use English as it naturally appears — introducing ourselves, asking for things, reacting, noticing, and responding.
It’s a setting where everyday language has a clear purpose. Even things like phrasal verbs tend to come up and settle more easily when they are part of what you are doing, rather than something to study.
If you’re joining with family members at different levels, everyone is able to take part in their own way. The session is held so that each person has space to speak, without pressure.
Many visitors expect to use more English while travelling, but find most interactions stay brief.
The Middle Way
You don’t need a full course to make progress with your English.
Many travellers choose a middle way — adding a small number of well-placed experiences into their trip, so their English develops naturally alongside it.
Who These Sessions Are Designed For
These shared zine sessions are designed primarily for international visitors using English as a second language during their travels in Scotland.
Most guests are adults travelling independently, as couples, or as part of a longer English or cultural trip.
The public Monday sessions are adult-focused shared tables.
Families with children are very welcome to book a separate private creative session instead, where the pace and structure can be adapted more comfortably for mixed ages and different English levels.
This session is for you if you:
- want a calm, thoughtful activity in English
- are visiting the area and want something more personal than a standard tourist activity
- find it easier to speak when your hands are busy
- want light support, without being corrected all the time
- are travelling alone, or want to share the experience with your family
You do not need to be artistic.
You do not need perfect English.
You just need to be willing to join in.

Light Support, No Pressure
I guide the session and offer gentle English support as we go.
That might mean helping a word come more quickly, supporting you to say something more clearly, or simply making the space feel easy enough for conversation to keep moving.
The aim is not to interrupt you. The aim is to help your English flow more naturally.
If you’d like to see how the sessions feel, I can share access to a small private Facebook group with images from recent workshops.
