Choose a Sustainable Tourism Language Holiday

Creating sustainable tourism language holidays isn’t a one-time decision: it’s an ongoing journey.

We’re learning, improving, and problem-solving to move towards more responsible travel practices, with both long-term and mid-term goals guiding us.

3 Ways Your Scottish Holiday Just Got Better

In this blog, we’re sharing 3 recent changes we’ve made to improve the sustainability of your English holiday.

In most cases, they will also enhance your overall experience, bringing you great flavours or deepening your connection to your English. In the case of the toilet roll… well. it seems the King uses it!

Practising sustainable tourism creates no fundamental conflict with our holidays, which use immersion in nature and culture to unlock your English and support our community.

The question is how much positive impact we can have.

We’re as ambitious about that as we are about you transforming your English and having a great holiday.

This blog shares the most recent part of this journey.

01 | CrowdFarming | Fresh Fruit

We have great options for market-farmed veggies – as we get a weekly veggie box from Tomnah’a Market Garden. However, Scotland is a bit short of nice fruit in springtime, so I researched options for buying fruit that avoids supermarkets and excessive transportation.

Crowdfarming fruit - oranges, lemons and avocados

In Southern Europe, the citrus and avocado season is drawing to a close. Many fruits are now ready to harvest—but not all will be picked. The conventional market often switches early to imports, even as high-quality fruit still hangs on European trees.

CrowdFarming farmers aim to prevent waste by relying on direct sales: only what has been ordered is harvested—and only when fully ripe on the tree. This model allows the final harvests of the season to reach consumers—fairly, transparently, and without dependency on wholesalers.

Delicious & Ethical

We ordered a box of avocados, oranges and lemons – and 3 litres of olive oil!

All supermarket avocados are chilled for transportation, reducing their flavour.

The results?
Spectacular. Super juicy oranges – the only disadvantage is that all the avocados reached peak ripeness at exactly the same time, so we made guacamole rather than having them over the week.

The week the first box arrived we were helping an expert in environmental initiatives for the German Government.

She quizzed me about transportation (shortest route, lorries 90% full), crowd distribution networks and food waste, so we explored the website together and reviewed the statistics CrowdFarming publish with a lot more scrutiny than I.  It passed on all all fronts!

02 | A Switch to Hybrid

This is a biggie!

We’ve upgraded the Blue Noun car to a hybrid.

We’d love to go full electric one day soon – but as our holidays take us exploring across Scotland and into some quite remote places, it isn’t quite feasible yet. The electric car charging infrastructure in the Scottish Highlands is there for people staying overnight in places – but less for spontaneous day travellers like ourselves.

Supporting Our Local Garage

We bought 2nd hand from Crieff’s local Suzuki car dealership – a family business, and immediately added roof bars to be able to transport bikes (and one day – a canoe!).

Scotland Just Got Possible!

03 | Unbleached Toilet Roll

Recycled rolls are generally made from printed office paper, which must be heavily bleached to avoid a final product that comes out an unappealing, sludgy grey colour.

Having lived in Barrow-in-Furness, and seen first-hand the massive industrial scarring of bleached toilet paper, I wanted an alternative.

Naked Paper uses cardboard waste and paper packaging instead of standard office paper.
These raw materials are naturally unbleached, giving the finished recycled rolls their signature warm brown shade, with no murky grey in sight.
Sure, bright white is a little bit nicer, but it’s not worth costing the landscape the pollution.

Toilet Roll Fit for a King

Since signing up, our suppliers, Naked Paper have just received an Enterprise Award in sustainable development!

The King’s Awards for Enterprise recognise companies that lead the way in innovation, international trade, sustainable development, and promoting opportunity.
Hopefully, this award will bring them widespread recognition and make unbleachet toilet roll the new normal.
It’s really just a case of getting use dto it!

As a company committed to sustainable manufacture, the Sustainable Development award is our Holy Grail.

Out of thousands of businesses considered across the UK, only 27 companies were selected in 2025 to receive this prestigious award. We’re one of them.
